A case of thymectomy of atrophic thymus gland in myasthenia gravis

Abstract
Myasthenia gravis is a disorder of neuromuscular transmission chracterized by fatigability and weakness of voluntary muscles.
Recent investigation has suggested immune basis for this disease.
In 1939, Blalock reported improvement in myasthenia gravis following the removal of thymic tumor.
Thereafter, thymectomy has emerged as an effective and safe form of therapy of myasthenia gravis.
Thymectomy is a treatment for not only thymus hyperplasia, and thymoma but also atrophic thymus in myasthenia gravis. Recently, we experienced a case of atrophic thymus gland in
myasthenia gravis in a 43 years old female with 4 years history of myasthenia gravis.
She had been treated with anticholinesterase and steroid, but no improvement was noticed.
After thymectomy was performed, ptosis, dysphagia and severe dyspnea were much improved.
